I always thought She-Ra was created trying to mimic Red Sonja like He-man did with Conan, but I did a WonderWoman sketch at nearly the same time as I did this piece, and it became clear they were copying WonderWoman.
He-mans sword (plus a jewel to feminize it)- instead of a magical lariat, long blond hair -instead of long black hair, similar tiara, braclets, bustier, and boots for costume elements, a flying horse -instead of a invisible jet. LOL, maybe I'm the only one realising this now cause I had like 0% exposure to WW growing up. (Sorry this was a strange epiphany for me.) Oh, a COLOR version can be seen here-----> [link] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - FYI: Colorists looking to practice their trade on this piece, there's a slightly larger version if you hit the download button. As per usual you may practice your skills on my stuff with my blessing as long as you link back to the original if you post it somewhere. |

I doubt the comparison, though. The best I've heard, He-Man was actually a take on Jack Kirby's "New Gods". Fantasy with high technology. Lots of idealistic good/evil clash. The rumors go either way. The first is, Kirby didn't want to deal with them. The second is DC was too pissy or greedy for the TV network. And in either case, they had no real idea for a "Plan B" so they scrapped the old pics and "Re-Visualized" it just enough to not be in lawsuit territory.
And "She-Ra" was just "Extra Marketing" at the height of He-Man's popularity. The real creepy thing is the "Network Censors" made the scriptwriters change everything. First, she was supposed to be as strong as He-Man. No big deal in a land of such extremes that requires a child's (or fantasist adult's) suspension of disbeilief. But, "No" the censors said; "She has to be thin and feminine. She can be smarter than He-Man, she can be faster, but she can't be more than half as strong as him." And since it was face getting pulled off the air if they refused, they had to re-do about a dozen episodes.
Also, believe it or not, the censors also made her clothing more revealing. She would have worn more if the plot hadn't been tampered with. And been a bit more muscular.
Really funny, in an alternate universe where the Network Censors fell into the Hyena pen at the Zoo, the "He-Man" jokes pop culture would have had
1. "She-Man"!
2. "Whattaya mean design a She-Ra action figure? Just put her head on a He-Man, throw in some extra wardrobe and double the price!"
